One of my first jobs using a piano was to hold classes in nursing homes and convalescent hospitals where I would play singalong songs which we also used as a catalyst to discuss the elderly resident's earlier years. Popular songs became a common ground that people shared and that in turn helped to open up discussions and relatable personal stories. I learned a lot from the residents about meaningful living and loving, enjoying and enduring life at all stages and ages and I came to love and cherish many of the songs that filled the soundtracks of their lives.
