Background: In March 2020, Lake Merritt in Oakland, California, marked the 150th anniversary of its designation as the nation’s first wildlife refuge. A planned public celebration, however, had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That unexpected moment became the catalyst for creating a series of community videos, while also providing an opportunity to draw from an extensive archive of Lake Merritt photographs I had taken since 2010.  
Lake Merritt 150th Anniversary video highlights its history and its stewards and the more than 100 species of migrating and resident birds that grace its shoreline. Experiencing this remarkable urban habitat has had a profound and eye-opening influence on my image gathering journey. Music for the video was created on a Korg Kross 2.
Gardens& Guardians focuses on the Gardens at Lake Merritt—primarily maintained by dedicated community volunteers—These gardens are a photogenic landscape of curated beauty that also serves as a peaceful natural sanctuary. This soundtrack includes music created for Autumn Lights Festival videos.  Composed on a Korg Kross 2 and Yamaha DGX-670.
Lake Merritt Breakfast Club, founded in 1933, has a long tradition of community involvement in enhancing this unique urban area. Among its many contributions are the restoration of the Necklace of Lights that surround the lakeshore and the creation of the magical Children’s Fairyland in Lakeside Park.
