features original instrumental music composed by John Kirkmire and used as soundtracks for YouTube videos — primarily about Lake Merritt. The music was composed on a Yamaha PSR-SX920, Korg Kross 2, and Yamaha DGX-670.
BACKGROUND In March 2020, Lake Merritt marked the 150th anniversary of its designation as the nation's first wildlife refuge. A planned public celebration had to be canceled due to COVID-19, and that unexpected moment became the catalyst for creating a series of community videos, drawing from an extensive archive of Lake Merritt photographs I had taken since 2010.
The Four Music Collections:
Lake Merritt 150th Anniversary — highlights the lake's history, its stewards, and the more than 100 species of migrating and resident birds along its shoreline. Tracks include Necklace of Lights, Stewards, Refuge, Migration, Pelicans, Tidal, and Sanctuary.
Gardens & Guardians — focuses on the Gardens at Lake Merritt, primarily maintained by dedicated community volunteers, a poetic landscape of curated beauty and a peaceful natural sanctuary. Tracks include The Gardens, Rock Garden, Bonsai, Butterfly, Festival, Autumn Lights, and Flight.
Lake Merritt Breakfast Club — honors the club founded in 1933, whose many contributions include restoring the Necklace of Lights and creating Children's Fairyland in Lakeside Park. Tracks include Breakfast Club Intro, Fairyland, Rehab, Lamposting, and Patina.
General Songtracks — a variety of music tracks used in 2 to 5 minute public and personal videos, with evocatively titled tracks including Saxy, Redwoods, The Vendors, LitterSOS, Dusk, Irony, Torii Gate, Birdsong, Mambo, Wedding, and Homeward, among others.
